Thin Spaces / Espaces Minces

January 6 to 21 , 2011, School of Architecture, McGill University, Montréal, Québec, Canada

An exhibition gathering conceptual models and installation work by architects Suresh Perera and Pierre Gendron.

This exhibition showed, through large-size models and installation, a perceptual experience in which the space of the exhibition room was altered and modified. The presented work was a continuation of previous researches funded by the Conseil des Arts et des Lettres du Québec.

These photographic collages are a sequel to an installation I realized while being architect in residence at the British School at Rome in 2009. While at the BSR I documented many examples of Trompe l’œil present in Renaissance and Baroque architecture, in Rome and elsewhere in Italy.
I looked at the discovery and development of the Perspectiva Artificialis which allowed architects such as Pozzo, Borromini and Bramante to virtually expand and distort space with the use of frescos, accelereted persepectives, and anamorphosis.

This installation attemps to ''renovate'' portions of the room with fake Italian materials (digital photography and Photoshop have replaced the painted fresco) and new openings offering unexpected views to the exterior of the exhibition room, thus transforming our perception of the space and our expectation of what lies outside of it.
