Opération [ Interface ] 9 to 24 June 1999
Presented simultaneously in the Shaughnessy House at the Canadian Centre for Architecture in Montréal, at the espace Callot of the Institut français d’architecture in Paris, and on the Internet. The Canadian Centre for Architecture (Montréal) and the Institut français d'architecture (Paris) presents Opération [Interface], an exhibition/work-in-progress combining architecture, photography, and new technologies. Opération [Interface] is the sixth in a series of exhibitions held in the Sottsass Room of the Shaughnessy House, all centering on the latest issues and explorations in architecture. Featuring installations created by architects, these exhibitions were designed to invigorate and participate actively in contemporary architectural culture. They have given the CCA the opportunity to present the work of architects dedicated to contemporary exploration, creators whose practice is testimony to the desire to resist the numerous commercial, economic, and technical pressures exerted in the domain of designing buildings today. Opération [ Interface ] offers a continuous projection of digital photographs from eight photographers from Québec and France. The works are transmitted simultaneously in the Shaughnessy House of the CCA, the espace Callot of the Institut français d’architecture (Ifa), and on the Internet (www.operationinterface.org). The result is a kaleidoscopic picture of current work by architects in both Montréal and Paris. This unique examination of the dialectic between the virtual and the real probes the connections that unite three sites: the exterior city, with its urban planning and architecture; the interior city, with its circuits and citizens in transit; and the virtual city, with its coordinating networks and modes.
